Breathe in quickly through the nose, feeling the coolness inside the nose. If your nose is stuffy, breathe in through the mouth. Breath out through the mouth, with the lips slightly open at the middle, as though blowing through a straw. Feel the air streaming through the lips, causing slight coolness.
Some respiratory therapists suggest their patients to practice this technique by saying different phrases silently during the breathing. During the in-breath through the nose, say silently “Smelling the coffee”. During the out-breath through slightly open mouth, say silently “Blowing the candle”.
When you are in distress, pain, panicky, feeling lost etc., you can quickly regain self control by practicing this mode 5 to 10 times. If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable when doing this, change to any other mode, till your feel normal. Resume 911 again. Continue this alternating practice, till the acute distress comes under control. After that, continue one of the other modes, to reinforce the control.
Use this great method freely, whenever you feel tense, stressed, worried, depressed, or bothered by disturbing thoughts or moods. Also try it when are in acute physical pain to avoid panic. In other situations, the signal to activate this practice is a feeling of tension in any of the muscles, from forehead to finger tips or toes. It quickly aborts those nascent tensions. Practicing in the morning for extended time, has remarkable effect on body and mind, fully charging them for tackling the busy day.
Benefits: It immediately arrests the wandering of mind towards stressful thoughts about past or future. You will quickly get detached from the grip of negative moods and feel comforted. It releases the tense muscles of jaws, face and all other parts of the body, up to the finger tips and toes.
