Folding mode

This is the easiest mode of ‘focusing on breathing’, easy to teach, understand, remember and practice even by preschoolers (3).

Start with any one hand, say the left hand. Gently flex the little finger (8). Breathe in, feeling the coolness inside the nose. When breathing out, silently and slowly say ‘one – one – one’. Breathe in second time, feeling the coolness inside the nose. When breathing out, silently and slowly say ‘two – two – two’. Breathe in third time. When breathing out, silently and slowly say ‘three – three – three’. Release the little finger.

Repeat the above steps at the other four fingers – ring finger, middle finger, index finger and the thumb.

Then switch to the right hand and repeat all above steps. Continue practicing, switching the hands.

In my experiments with children at Robert C. Parker School (6) I found that even 5 – 6 years old children absorb many modes of ‘Focusing on breathing’ (3) and use it as their own handy self-calming tool. We just have to introduce it to them. (4)

(1)  I demonstrated the ‘Tip mode’ (2) to Dev Udugula, a 10 year old boy, whose dad works in a local Indian store. I made him practice this mode on two hands in my presence, to make sure he got it right. I met Dev after a month, at my next visit. I asked him whether he remembered about the breathing. He said ‘yes’. When I asked him to show me how he was doing it, he showed me this ‘folding finger mode’ which he devised on his own! His dad said the boy was found practicing the technique at home.

(8) Some people including children find it difficult to fold only the little finger or the ring finger. When they fold the little finger, the next finger, the ring finger also folds partly. These are not problems as long as they are aware of which finger they are working on. Even a little flexing of the targeted finger serves our purpose. Ignore the partial bending of the adjacent finger.
